The SMT in the model code stands for Super Metal Top — a metal tip section rather than carbon, which is an unusual thing to do and a deliberate one: metal transmits vibration far better than resin-bound fibre, so the faint tap of a squid taking the egi on the drop arrives as a distinct tick instead of a vague heaviness. At 0.7 mm the tip is fine enough to bend on a #1.8 egi, and at 90 g over 8'8 the rod stays balanced through a full night of jerking. This is a rod for anglers who have stopped worrying about casting distance and started worrying about the bites they can't feel.
