Saltwater Casting
Metal thrown a long way from rock platforms and surf beaches. Australian salmon and tailor through the cooler months, with bonito, kingfish and mackerel when the current pushes warm water in close.
The three numbers that matter
READ THIS BEFORE THE GEARLength buys distance and keeps line up out of the wash. A 9ft rod is easier to work all day; 10ft and over earns its keep from a high platform.
Weight is chosen by wind and swell, not by depth. A 40g punches into a headwind that a 20g will never beat, and that is usually the whole difference.
Keep it short — 40 to 80cm. Casting load is high off the rocks and a compact leader is far easier to manage than a rod-length one.
