Yamashita EGI OH K Squid Jig

The EGI OH K is the jig to tie on when squid are shut down or the conditions are working against you. Yamashita built it around a single idea: a fall so stable that a pressured squid has no reason to refuse it. Its rear Hydro Fin and flat-bellied pentagon body keep the sink dead straight even in wind chop and current — and a steady, unhurried drop is exactly what triggers strikes from wary southern calamari and arrow squid. Sizes 2.5–4.0 cover everything from skinny weed flats to deeper reef edges.

Hydro Sinker & Combi Fine hooks. The tin sinker is wide and knife-edged for straight-line tracking, and it takes tuning easily — wrap lead wire for a deep tune, open the hole out for a shallow one. Sink speed is often the thing that flips a slow session, so it is worth carrying one of each. The crown is a stepped set of hooks at two different opening angles, there to convert the soft, half-hearted grabs you get from cold squid.

Choosing a sink rate. The plain sizes (2.5 / 3.0 / 3.5 / 4.0) are the basic tier and drop at roughly 3 seconds per metre — the everyday choice over reef edges and in a bit of depth. S = Shallow halves that to about 6 sec/m, which is what you want over shallow weed beds and ribbon grass where a basic jig buries itself before the squid commits. SS = Super Shallow is slower again at about 8 sec/m, for knee-deep flats, oyster racks and the hanging-in-their-face presentations that pressured calamari fall for. Same body, same colours — only the sinker changes.
