GT & Popping

Big topwater worked hard over shallow reef and washes. Giant trevally first, but the same rig covers queenfish, tuna and the heavier kingfish. This is the heaviest tackle in the shop and none of it is optional — the reef decides the numbers, not the fish.

The three numbers that matter

READ THIS BEFORE THE GEAR
PE RATING 8 – 10

Roughly 80–130lb. Carry 250–300m of it — a hooked fish takes a lot of line in the first run, and you do not get a second chance at the bommie.

PE 8 IS THE FLOOR
LEADER 100 – 200LB

Heavy mono or fluoro, joined with an FG knot so the connection runs through the guides on the cast. Coral abrasion sets this number.

130LB OFF THE REEF
REEL SIZE 14000 – 20000

Capacity and a properly sealed drag. Anything smaller runs out of line before the fish runs out of reef.

SEALED DRAG, NO EXCEPTIONS
